Description
Manhattan Valley, once known as the Bloomingdale District, is an area that has undergone quite a metamorphosis in the past few decades. Once a crime-ridden neighborhood with many abandoned residences, this area is now filled with open, green spaces and middle-class neighbors. The credit goes in part to rehab efforts by local housing groups like the Manhattan Valley Development Corporation and real estate developers that renovated many properties into charming, but affordable, townhomes and co-ops close to Central Park.

The neighborhood stretches between 110th street to the north, Central Park West to the east, 96th Street to the south, and Broadway to the west.

Also adding to the mix is the growing number of Barnard College and Columbia University students who have taken up residence in recent years. Many students and graduates go on to take advantage of the real estate prices, which are steadily increasing, but considerably less than other parts of Lower Manhattan.

Manhattan Valley is rapidly evolving as new developments built after the Wall Street boom of the early 1980s have greatly altered the character of the neighborhood. This has led to many big name retailers to set up shop along Broadway and Columbus Avenue but some of the older or independent retailers have managed to survive the shift.

Since the shopping options range from Dollar Tree to Whole Foods, it is safe to say there is something for everyone.

Many Manhattan Valley shops can be found along Broadway but Amsterdam Avenue is the place for noteworthy eateries, like Buca Brick Oven Pizza. There are also some great places along Broadway like Flor de Mayo and Henry's Restaurant.

There are also some great nightlife options as anyone can find six bars between 108th and 110th Streets. Manhattan Valley is also home to the Ding-Dong Lounge on Columbus, which was named one of the Best Dive Bars by Village Voice.
