Description
The Lennox Hill neighborhood is made up primarily of residential tenement buildings as a result of the elevated rail line that ran through it via Third Ave. until the 1950’s when it was finally decommissioned and demolished. After the ‘El’ was done away with, new residential developments quickly began to take root and spring up all over the place in the form of luxury high rise apartment buildings. The most notable of these luxury residential buildings are located on the east side of the neighborhood, both to the north and the south. They are Sutton Place at the southern end and to the north you have the area around Carl Schurz.
In between those two distinct areas you have Rockefeller University and the New York Hospital which occupy the vast majority of the neighborhood’s waterfront real estate on the East River. The architectural firm of Coolidge, Shepley Bullfinch & Abbott created the Art Deco design of the New York Hospital and it has long been a major architectural landmark in the city.

The Lennox Hill avenues provide a plentiful array of choices when it comes to restaurants, post-war apartment buildings and numerous retail establishments. On Third Avenue, just across from the anchor Bloomingdales’ Department Store, sits a cluster of movie theaters to provide entertainment any time. There is also a very colorfully designed tram station nearby, however access to mass transit in the area is limited to the Lexington Avenue line. Cross-town buses do run on 72nd, 79th and 57th Streets so transportation to other parts of the city is possible, if not too inconvenient.

Many people consider Third Avenue to be Lennox Hill’s most impressive area as it hosts a plethora of amazing business establishments and restaurants such as the Atlantic Grill, Grace’s Marketplace (which is a gourmet food store), and the furnishing emporium Gracious Home.
