Description
Carnegie Hill is considered by many New Yorkers, especially those with families, to be perhaps the best residential neighborhood in the city. It is located between 79th and 98th Streets and Fifth Avenue with Third Avenue to the west.

Some of the city's finest museums can be found in Carnegie Hill on what has been dubbed 'Museum Mile', which has the largest concentration of museums in the city including the Metropolitan Museum of Art between 80th and 84th Streets on Fifth Avenue, the National Design Museum located in the former Carnegie Mansion on 91st Street, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum at 88th Street, the National Academy between 89th and 90th Streets, and the Jewish Museum housed in the Felix M. Warburg mansion at 92nd Street.

Among the other attraction to the Carnegie Hill neighborhood include the large number of fine private schools, religious institutions, and an ample offering of family-sized apartments, most of which are in pre-war buildings. There is a nice, comfortable mix of notable architecture, as well as close proximity to excellent public transportation, great shopping and dining establishments, and even Central Park. You couldn't ask much more from a residential neighborhood in NYC.

The area derived its name from the mansion that steel magnate Andrew Carnegie built between 90th and 91st Streets on Fifth Avenue in his heyday. Generally, the area is comprised of good-sized apartments and townhouses that were built with characteristic architectural details and fine craftsmanship. A good deal of the area between Fifth and Park Avenues between 79th and 94th Streets has been officially deemed historical landmark districts and with that being the case, it isn't unreasonable to believe that there won't be a lot of new construction in the area in the future. Being that this is one of the nicest neighborhoods in the city, you can expect that it is not inexpensive to live here, as well.
