Description
Bedford-Stuyvesant, better known as Bed-Stuy, has many unique qualities. This large neighborhood has a rich history, many celebrities who were once residents, and a diverse culture thanks to recent gentrification.

In Bedford-Stuyvesant, many renovated brownstones with 19th Century architecture are reasonable in price. This neighborhood also has the highest number of pre-war brownstones in all of New York City. Its neighbors are made up of
artists, students, and young professionals from all backgrounds as well as those generations that originally migrated from an overcrowded Harlem many decades ago.

On Fulton Street are ethnic restaurants, nail salons, and other small retailers. Highly recommended are Jeffrey's, Peaches Hothouse, and Corlette NY for anyone seeking American, Caribbean, or French cuisine.

However, on Lewis Avenue there are a growing number of hip coffee shops and eateries. Bedford-Stuyvesant is also seeing many art galleries, bakeries, and wine bars spurt up around the neighborhood.

One place that is considered a landmark is the Billie Holiday Theatre inside of the Restoration Plaza. Restoration also houses The Skylight Art Gallery, The Royal Blue Music Recording Studios, and many other programs that focus on asset management and green development.

This neighborhood, while generally safe during the day, changes by the block as classic renovated homes may alternate with abandoned structures. For this reason, locals will advise that anyone traveling after dark have private car service to take them to or from their destination.

Many modes of public transportation in Bedford-Stuyvesant include several subway lines, the New York City Transit bus lines, IND and BMT transit systems.

One fun fact about Bedford-Stuyvesant is that it has been featured in many films and TV programs over the years. From movie classics like the French Connection and Summer of Sam to small-screen cult favorites Prison Break and Everybody Hates Chris, based on the life of actor/comedian Chris Rock.
